Team Spotlight: Katie Grogan

As part of our Team Spotlight series, we sat down with [CharlieHR](http://www.charliehr.com/) Product Designer [Katie Grogan](https://www.linkedin.com/in/katie-grogan-0a312887/) to hear more about what she gets up to every day at work.

What’s your job title?

I’m a Product Designer.

What does your role entail?

Designing and building features that go into CharlieHR.

What were you doing before this?

I worked at a gallery for a bit before diving into the world of development. I learned to code at my previous job (a startup that ran code courses).

What’s the best part of your job?

Being challenged every day; there’s always some kind of hurdle to overcome. It’s never boring, which is a really good thing.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

Same thing! Sometimes trying to figure out the best solution to a problem can be really frustrating.

What’s the most surprising thing about your job?

Initially, I was surprised at how collaborative the role is. I’m much better at my job when I rely on others around me.

What are the key skills required for someone in your role?

Experience with code and designing for the web. It’s pretty different to print design and always changing, so I guess being comfortable with change helps too!

What’s a piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a career in your area?

If you’re even a little bit intrigued by code, have a look online or take an in-person course. I’m so glad I did! I’d recommend SuperHi and Treehouse.

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you do?

Hopefully something creative still. Maybe something in animation — I’d give Ed Catmull a call…

What are your passions outside of work?

Food, art/illustration, and travel.
